How load management lets you add chargers without upgrading the grid

The trick that lets many chargers share one connection: they take turns at full power instead of all peaking at once.

The instinct when adding chargers is to assume each one needs its own slice of grid capacity. That’s the assumption that leads operators toward an expensive grid upgrade — and it’s usually wrong.

Chargers rarely all peak at once

In a real depot, vehicles arrive at different times, some are nearly full, and few need maximum power simultaneously. Load management software puts numbers to that reality. It watches the total draw across every charger and shares your available capacity between them, throttling or briefly pausing some so the combined load never breaches your connection limit.

Taking turns, not standing in a queue

The effect is that chargers take turns at full power rather than all demanding it together. A van that’s nearly charged is eased back so a nearly-empty one can draw more; nothing trips the main fuse. Because depot vehicles typically sit for hours overnight, there’s plenty of time to cycle through the fleet without anyone noticing — every vehicle still leaves full.

Why this saves real money

A modest connection can serve a surprisingly large yard this way. Instead of paying your DNO for reinforcement — often the slowest, least predictable cost in the whole project — you fit the charging to the power you already have. It’s routinely cheaper to invest in smart-charging software than to widen the connection, which is why load management belongs in the design from day one.

There’s a limit, of course: if your genuine simultaneous need exceeds the connection even after spreading the load, you’ll need more capacity or an on-site battery. But for most depots, load management is the single cheapest way to add chargers without touching the grid. Get a first read on your numbers with the Grid Capacity Estimator.
