The complete UK funding landscape for depot electrification

The Depot Charging Scheme is one piece of a wider funding map — vehicle grants, bus and truck schemes, and more. Here's how they fit together, and how to be ready before a window opens.

Funding is the topic most likely to turn a plan into action, because a grant that covers a real share of the cost changes the whole business case. But the Depot Charging Scheme is only one piece of the map, and the pieces cover different things. This guide is the plain-English overview of what’s available to help electrify a depot and the vehicles that use it — and how to be ready to claim it. For the live status of the main scheme, the Funding tracker is kept current.

The Depot Charging Scheme: chargers and civils

The headline scheme for depots is a £170m programme running from 2026 to 2030, delivered in timed application windows. It covers a share of chargepoint and civil-works costs — in the first window, 70% up to £1m per organisation. Crucially, it does not cover your grid reinforcement or the vehicles, and battery and solar eligibility is not confirmed. It’s aimed at UK organisations operating vehicles from a depot. Check the current terms on the Funding tracker before planning around a figure.

Vehicle grants: trucks and vans

The chargers are only half the spend; the vehicles are the other half, and they have their own support. Grants toward the purchase of electric vans and trucks reduce the vehicle capital cost that sits outside the Depot Charging Scheme. These change over time and by vehicle type, so the practical move is to check what’s live for your fleet at the point you buy — and to remember they stack alongside the infrastructure grant rather than overlapping with it.

Bus and coach: the ZEBRA route

Bus operators and local transport authorities have a distinct and well-established route in the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) programme, which supports zero-emission buses and their depot infrastructure. If your fleet is buses or coaches, this — not the general depot scheme — is usually the primary door, and it comes with its own process and timelines.

Freight innovation and megawatt charging

At the heavy end, government and innovation funding has backed electric HGV demonstrators and the first megawatt charging hubs. These programmes are more about pioneering the hardest use cases than routine grants, but for larger freight operators they’re worth watching, and they’re covered in the HGV depot guide.

What funding won’t cover — and being ready

Two gaps catch people out: grid reinforcement and the DNO connection, and much of the vehicle cost beyond the specific vehicle grants. Budget for those separately. And because schemes run in windows that can close early once funds are committed, the operators who win are the ones who are application-ready in advance — site and supply details gathered, quotes obtained, plans in place. Getting your paperwork ready before a window opens is worth real money.

The bottom line

Think of funding as a map, not a single grant: the Depot Charging Scheme for chargers and civils, vehicle grants for the fleet, ZEBRA for buses, innovation funding at the freight frontier — and grid and vehicle gaps you fund yourself. Learn what applies to you, get application-ready early, and check the Grant Eligibility Checker and the Funding tracker for where things stand today.
